Ewan has settled into a peaceful and contented life with his adopted son, Nathan. They live in isolation in the Scottish Highlands, away from the hustle and bustle of the ＆civilised＊ world and free from the recriminations of previous misdeeds.
Nathan is growing into adulthood but he does not share Ewan＊s idyllic view of their life. He constantly plots his revenge over his real father, Stefan, for killing his mother, and secretly seethes with hate and envy. He is jealous of Ewan＊s seemingly unending strength and stamina and, most of all, of his magic!
Their secret sanctuary in the mountains is discovered, culminating in a violent and bloody showdown. Ewan and Nathan must now try to blend in in the city, but the battle on the mountain does not go unnoticed by the authorities. Detective Inspector Gerald Dummer has been doggedly tracking an invincible mountain hermit for fifteen years and is closing in on his quarry!
Over all the players stand the gods, watching and manipulating as the eternal struggle between those who stand with the humans and those who stand with the dragons approaches its devastating finale. The gods exercise complete power over mortals without thought of repercussion, but in using Ewan to their own ends they have empowered him beyond their intentions, and when he starts to question their decisions they find that they can no longer force him to comply.
As his power grows he learns more about the next dimension, where the spirits of the dead live on. He is pivotal in the gods＊ plans, but he discovers that it was they who took his beloved wife and child from his side… and he wants them back!
