The essay that criticized the theory of “sexual fluidity”.
This essay is the manifesto of the theory of sexual rigidity, as opposed to the one of sexual fluidity (Diamond). It carries on a radical distinction between sexual orientation and sexual behavior in order to challenge widespread beliefs about sexuality: that orientation is a choice, that homosexuality is caused by prolonged deprivation of the opposite sex, that surveys of sexual experiences can indicate the nature of the sex drive, that it is possible to “heal” from homosexuality, that homosexuality is widespread among animals, that the Kinsey scale measures sexual orientation and, finally, that sexuality is fluid.
※Today we never talk about sexuality without ending up, in one way or another, talking about politics or social rights, and it seems rather that we use this topic as a bridge to land into other far more worthy topics of interest. This is a pragmatic choice that could be justified, if it were not for the fact that, in doing so, one neglects science or worse bends it to favor the rash conclusions of this or that ideology, and it is this choice, which has become normal even among some researchers, that is the main cause of the decay of sexology. Hence my choice to take the opposite path: I will refrain from any judgment, I will present the facts of reason, the findings of science, which the readers will be free to observe and ponder for themselves§.
From this premise begins a journey of discovery into the science of sexuality. The path is treacherous, and sometimes hidden. It is easy to get lost. The questions are many: is sexuality fluid or rigid? Is it innate or is it chosen? How is it measured? Can it be modified in any way? What directions can it take? Before looking for the answers, it is perhaps necessary to rethink the questions.
